The Religion Department celebrates its first James Melvin Washington Grant recipient

February 5, 2026

Dr. Turner is the first recipient of the James Melvin Washington Research Grant in Black Baptist History. This competitive award honors the legacy of Dr. Washington who was Professor of Modern and American Church History at Union Theological Seminary in New York. His landmark work, Frustrated Fellowship: The Black Baptist Quest for Social Power remains an important contribution to the study of African American Baptists and their churches and denominations. The Religion Department has established the Washington Grant to encourage the research and scholarship of historians who are using Baptist archives within the United States to tell these stories.

This event is free and open to the public.
