Biography
Gerhard Stuebben is a native of San Antonio, Texas. Since college Gerhard has been fascinated by the origins of Christianity as well as its development into new but contiguous forms throughout history. He and his wife Kim have a two-year-old daughter, Roza, who loves doggies, dinosaurs and stickers.
Academic Interests and Research
Gerhard is a historian trained in the subfield of World Christianity, which emphasizes the movement of Christianity to new peoples through history as well as the impact that such cross-cultural dynamics have on the fluid shape of the religion. Within the field he is interested in the mutual interactions between imperial centers and peripheries, the role of violence in the transmission of religion, and the state’s use of religion as an instrument of social control. Gerhard is currently writing on the history of Liberation Theology and the role that conflict over Marxism within the Latin American Catholic episcopacy played in the development of the movement. Beyond this specific topic, Gerhard is interested in the expansion of Christianity to new peoples throughout history, the role of violence in the history of religion, the legacy of Rome in Europe and European Christianity, the varied development of Christianities outside of the Roman and post-Roman worlds, the relationship between religion and the state, and the mutual influence between religion and economic systems.
