Biography
Having been raised on the east coast, Rodney now calls Albuquerque, NM home and, given half a chance, will evangelize fiercely for the high desert climate and Albuquerque’s International Balloon Fiesta. He is an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene and former worship pastor, still continually looking for time to keep up his guitar playing. (The struggle is made especially poignant under the disapproving glare of his John Wesley and Phineas Bresee bobbleheads.) He enjoys DIY furniture projects, a strong latte in a comfortable coffeeshop, a well-polished oxford, and trying to get his students to refer to him as “the gangster of love” …or “Maurice.”
Academic Interests and Research
Rodney is a New Testament scholar whose work has tended to emphasize issues of social context and history, often exploring the text through social scientific methodologies. His dissertation looked at the Gospel of Matthew through the lens of ancient Greco-Roman associations and focused on how ancient small group dynamics likely conditioned the Gospel’s earliest readers/hearers regarding issues of status and hierarchy, divine presence, and behavioral expectations. He has (co-)published articles on Romans and 1 Corinthians and has continuing projects looking into social and intertextual issues within Matthew.
