Darren J. N. Middleton joined the Department of Religion in the autumn semester of 2026 and has over thirty years of experience in American higher education, most recently as Director of the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core.
Born and raised in Nottingham, England, he is the author or editor of fourteen books, and over fifty articles and book chapters, addressing such varied subjects as Greek poet Nikos Kazantzakis, Japanese author Shusaku Endo, English novelist Graham Greene, and American writer Cormac McCarthy, along with global studies of the Rastafari religious movement, an interest growing out of childhood friendship with Jamaican immigrants to his hometown.
Middleton serves as editor-in-chief of Christianity and Literature, a peer-reviewed journal devoted to what happens at the intersection of literary art and Christian thought, experience, and practice.
He is married to Dr. Elizabeth Flowers, an American religious historian, and together they have a college-age son.
